Check Out My Glass: A Guide to Selecting a Sauna Door
The sauna door is one of the more important parts of the sauna construction and should be considered as early in the planning stage as possible. Sauna doors for sale are different than other doors because they are typically constructed without paint, are smaller to prevent heat from escaping and often incorporate glass to let in light and create a view while in the sauna.
The sauna door I chose for my sauna was Almost Heaven’s deluxe glass door pictured here:
Almost Heaven’s glass door is 24.25″ wide and 56” tall, has worked perfectly for my sauna, and is one of a handful of sauna doors for sale. It has a wood handle for the interior, so I do not burn myself when I try to open the door. It also is all glass so that I can look out at my garden while sitting on the sauna bench. While I don’t appreciate the lower height on the few occasions I have bumped my head, the lower height helps keep the heat trapped in the Loyly pocket.
Buying vs. Building
A regular door will not work since regular doors have chemicals and sizes that are not conducive to sauna. That means you are left with two options: build your own sauna door or buy a sauna door from a specialty sauna manufacturer. If this is your first sauna build and you do not have a ton of similar DYI experience, then I recommend buying a sauna door for sale from Almost Heavens, Superior Sauna and Steam, or someplace similar since building the door does require moving parts and some design that is difficult. Their doors are also quality tested, so you know they are going to work in a sauna environment and your other sauna materials. Of course, if you want to save a little money and are ambitious, you can build your own.
Dimensions of the Sauna Door
When selecting a sauna door for sale, it is important to get the right size door for the sauna room dimensions. My 7’x5’ sauna has done well with the 24.25″x56” glass door from Almost Heaven. Keep in mind that opening and closing the door is where you lose a lot of heat during the sauna process so you will want to keep the door as small as possible while still being practical.
Material of the Sauna Doors for sale
There are typically three different types of sauna doors for sale on the market: traditional wood doors, glass doors with wooden frames, and all-glass doors. Likely the biggest decision you will make in the sauna door selection is whether you go with a glass door or a wood door. If you are building your own sauna, I think buying a glass door works great because it gives you a window and a door in one. While you certainly lose some insulation properties by choosing glass, you gain a better aesthetic and overall sauna experience. I have not had a problem getting my sauna hot enough, or staying hot, despite having a glass sauna door.
If you already have a window elsewhere in your sauna or very concerned about insulation, then you can choose a wood door. But be careful of overweighting the importance of insulation without considering the feeling of being trapped in a wooden box with no windows.
Choosing the right sauna door is a big step in a successful sauna-building project. If you are tight on funds or are confident woodworker, then building your own sauna door is likely preferred for you. But if you are like me or most sauna builders, buying a pre-made sauna door for sale will help you get your sauna done with a quality door you know will work. When it comes to selecting a door material, I recommend a glass door for its aesthetic value, despite any insulation value you may lose.
